Royal Chiang Mai Golf Club
Designed by 5 times British Open winner Peter Thomson and Michael Wolveridge, this 6900 yard, par 72, park-land style course is located 30 minutes from Chiang Mai, in the foothills of Northern Thailand. The 2000 rai site, a former fruit orchard, provides breathtaking panoramic vistas of mountains in the distance. The high altitude provides a cooler, less humid climate, sweet refreshing air, and gentle breezes. It's filled with the songs of birds, an abundance of wildlife, and thousands of flowering trees erupting in different fragrances and colors every month of the year. The design uses elements from a British links style course, including bumpy gently rolling fairways, pot bunkers and closely mowed areas around the greens. |

Green Valley Golf Club - Chiang Mai
Situated in the lowlands, only 20 minutes from downtown Chiang Mai, this Dennis Griffiths & Associates designed championship course offers an unusually tough challenge. The heat and humidity, along with the 7,200 yards of wide open fairways, tough water hazards on every hole, plenty of bunkers, and few trees, make for a difficult and thirsty round of golf. Ideally played in the early morning or late afternoon, due to lack of trees, this tournament calibre course has Chiang Mai's most superbly conditioned and maintained fairways and greens. The clubhouse is a model of excellence. Green Valley is now featuring night time golf that is a must to try out with
stunning background lighting behind the palm trees.
At the time of writing it is 9 holes with superb lighting and later on this year 2010 the whole course will be lid up. |

Mae Jo Golf Club
Sculpted from fertile orchards in the foothills 20 minutes north of Chiang Mai is one of Asia’s finest courses. Beautifully designed 6,700 yard, par-72 jewel from 2004 by Seni Thirawat is risk-reward, as its lush, narrow fairways slither through the sweetly scented mango, citrus and lychee ‘Garden of Eden’ like the golden pythons golfer’s sometimes see. Throughout the year the air is sweetly scented with fragrant blossoms, and the trees laden with fruit. Created Banthun Tantivit, the clubhouse, restaurant, lodge, golf course and extensive practice facilities are impeccably first-class. Although only opened in 2004, it’s superbly conditioned fairways and greens play more like a mature course than a newly constructed one. The breathtaking vistas from the 15th tee is but another great reason to visit Mae-Jo.

Gassan Khuntan Golf Club and Resort
Only one hour south of Chiang Mai is Gassan’s new Khuntan Resort. Khuntan means “Devil Mountain’ and this 18-hole, 7,100 yard, par-72 creation from 2004 is devilishly difficult. Tucked in the ‘dragon-like’ folds of Lampang’s foothills on a riverbank, the distinctive design of the course, clubhouse and resort is pure “eye candy”. Its target golf/risk-reward style, the lack of a practice range, no golf course guidebook, and clever optical illusions make hitting the right shot, with the right club, to the right spot a true test. When you stand on the tee of the par-3, - 5th hole and face a mid-iron shot to a tiny island green, in the middle of a huge lake, into the teeth of swirling winds, you will know why this course is aptly named. Although club/shot selection are demanding, the relentless challenge only adds to the experience. To gain par takes focus, making the occasional birdie that much more special. For an unforgettable day of golf in a truly spectacular setting, head south.

Gassan Lake City – Lamphun
Experience the charm of Northern Thailand at Chiang Mai’s newest championship golf course. Only 15 minutes south of Chiang Mai is Gassan’s newest masterpiece, the extraordinary Lake City. This 18-hole, 6,400 yard, par-72 beauty from 2005, designed by Gassan’s owner, noted Thai architect Pravit Reang-Po, mirror’s the unique clubhouse and the sculpted bunkers of Gassan’s Khuntan Resort. Also a target golf and risk-reward layout, Lake City has expansive water hazards on every hole. Many of the par-4’s can be driven yet danger lurks. The short approach shots to the greens demand precision and proper placement so Lake City rewards thoughtful play over pure power.

Santiburi - Chiang Rai
This 18 hole, 7,000, par 72, Robert Trent Jones Jr. masterpiece is widely regarded as one of the best conceived, and conditioned golf courses in Asia. This brainchild of Khun Santi Bhirombhakdi, the owner of Thailand's Singha Beer, is an exquisite example of understated elegance. Santiburi offers an aesthetic feast for the golf connoisseur. The golf course is world class, yet it is playable and enjoyable for golfers on every skill level. Set into the contours of a valley, it offers a superbly landscaped golf course that winds beneath a canopy of magnificent shade trees, across crystal clear lakes and streams, reflecting turquoise skies and pearl white clouds above, and the lush green foothills and mountains of Chiang Rai in the distance.

Gold Canyon Golf Course- Lamphun
Situated approximately 50 km south-east of Chiang Mai, Gold Canyon ( former Gold Mountain is settled in a rugged and rural area not far from Lamphun. Officially opening in early spring 2009, design by Khun Senit this is one of the areas newest courses. Surrounded by fields, orchards, woodlands and, of course, Canyons, Gold Canyon provides a golfer’s delight in tranquility and scenic beauty.
Given its youthfulness, it will likely be at least a couple more years before Gold Canyon grows into its full potential. Presently, water and bunkers do not pose much of an obstacle to one’s game. However, be wary of trees, trees…and more trees! Indeed, trees can be a major problem on no less than 5 holes in so far as being inexplicably situated directly in front of the tee-boxes. Again, perhaps time will allow for a few modifications, as well as bringing more water and bunkers into play.
Playing at just over 7,300 yards from the back-tees, Gold Canyon Golf Course is a par 72 course of fairly flat terrain. But be prepared to do a lot of additional walking as the distance from green-to-tee is long and often hilly. The clubhouse and other amenities should be fully operational by early 2010. As is, this course still provides a nice change from Chiang Mai proper and introduces golfers to what may be a new trend in golf course design.

Chiang Mai Inthanon Golf Resort
Inthanon Golf Resort officially opened its full compliment of 18 holes in November 2009. Offering a majestic mountain view all around, it’s located about an hour south-west of Chiang Mai’s city-centre. The course takes its name from Doi Inthanon, the highest peak in Thailand (2,565 m. at its summit), and comprises part of the mountain range separating Thailand and Burma (Myanmar). This is another of the new courses on the outskirts of Chiang Mai, not far from Hang Dong, and was designed by Khun Suphachai Silamon.
Situated in a valley like setting, the course is well maintained with plush fairways, numerous bunkers, and several water hazards. It is a par 72 and plays at 7,268 yards from the back tees. As with many of the newer courses, the distances from green to tee make this a much longer course to walk than otherwise indicated. The back 9 is the more scenic part of this course and is an absolute joy to play. For those already familiar with Chiang Mai’s more established courses, hole 18 is similar to the closing hole at Highlands with its downhill, dogleg, and water approach to the green.
The fairways and greens are in immaculate condition. Given it originally opened as a 9-hole course in late 2008, the caddies have developed a fairly good knowledge of the fairways and greens. Judging from the progress being made, the clubhouse and other amenities should open in March 2010. However, don’t let this dissuade you from trying Inthanon Golf Resort now! Chiang Mai’s latest offering feels and plays like a course well beyond its years, and makes for a very pleasant change from some of the other more familiar venues in and around Chiang Mai.
